The Arabic word “Islam” means many things at once: submission, obedience, surrender, peace. Setting his face resolutely against the worship of false gods, Muhammad accepted Jews and Christians as “People of the Book” but added the Qur’an to the TANAKH and the New Testament as the scriptures which reveal the way in which Allah (literally, “the God”) would have people live. There are almost one billion Muslims in the world, of which fewer than 20% speak Arabic. There are at least 250,000 Canadian Muslims, most of whom are citizens naturalized during the last twenty years. This class provides a broad introduction to the study of Islam. It also serves as prerequisite to many classes offered in Comparative Religion at Dalhousie beyond the 2000-level.
