Abstract:

This case study investigates the impact of short‑form video consumption on This case study examines the impact of short-form video consumption on students’ ability to engage in sustained reading tasks in English language classes. With the rapid expansion of platforms such as TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts, students increasingly favor short, fragmented content over longer and more complex texts. This study investigates whether frequent exposure to short-form videos is associated with reduced reading endurance and lower comprehension of extended literary texts and academic articles.

A mixed-methods case study design was employed with 60 university students during the 2024–2025 academic year. Data were collected using attention span scales, reading comprehension assessments, and structured questionnaires. Quantitative analysis conducted using SPSS revealed a significant negative correlation between time spent on short-form video platforms and students’ reading performance scores. In addition, qualitative interviews indicated a tendency among students toward reduced patience for extended reading tasks and a preference for fast-paced, easily consumable content.

Overall, the findings suggest that habitual engagement with short-form video content may negatively influence students’ ability to sustain attention and effectively engage with academic reading materials in English. The study highlights important implications for instructional practices and underscores the need to strengthen digital literacy and attention training within educational contexts.

تبحث هذه الدراسة الحالة في تأثير استهلاك مقاطع الفيديو القصيرة على قدرة الطلاب على الانخراط في مهام القراءة المستمرة في حصص اللغة الإنجليزية. ومع التوسع السريع لمنصات مثل تيك توك وإنستغرام ريلز ويوتيوب شورتس، أصبح الطلاب يميلون بشكل متزايد إلى تفضيل المحتوى القصير والمجزأ على النصوص الأطول والأكثر تعقيدًا. وتستكشف هذه الدراسة ما إذا كان التعرض المتكرر لمقاطع الفيديو القصيرة يرتبط بانخفاض القدرة على التحمل القرائي وضعف فهم النصوص الأدبية الممتدة والمقالات الأكاديمية.

تم استخدام تصميم دراسة حالة بمنهج مختلط (كمي ونوعي) على 60 طالبًا جامعيًا خلال العام الأكاديمي 2024–2025. وقد جُمعت البيانات باستخدام مقاييس مدى الانتباه، واختبارات فهم المقروء، والاستبيانات المنظمة. وأظهر التحليل الكمي باستخدام برنامج SPSS وجود علاقة سلبية ذات دلالة إحصائية بين الوقت المستغرق في استخدام منصات الفيديو القصير وبين درجات أداء القراءة لدى الطلاب. كما أشارت المقابلات النوعية إلى ميل الطلاب نحو انخفاض الصبر تجاه مهام القراءة الطويلة وتفضيلهم للمحتوى السريع وسهل الاستهلاك.

وبشكل عام، تشير النتائج إلى أن الاعتياد على استهلاك محتوى الفيديو القصير قد يؤثر سلبًا في قدرة الطلاب على الحفاظ على الانتباه والتفاعل الفعّال مع مواد القراءة الأكاديمية باللغة الإنجليزية. وتسلط الدراسة الضوء على آثار مهمة للممارسات التعليمية، وتؤكد الحاجة إلى تعزيز التربية الرقمية وتنمية مهارات الانتباه داخل السياقات التعليمية.
